It stays in the house
The hub, its database and its history run on your own hardware. Automations keep working when the internet does not, and remote access is an outbound encrypted tunnel the hub dials itself, so nothing has to be opened up on your network. Some optional features do call out to services you choose to connect — a weather forecast, a car account, a language model for the assistant — and those are yours to switch on or leave off.
